Confined Area Operations

You will fly into and out of confined areas — assessing obstacles, managing power margins, and choosing approach and departure paths that keep you safe.

About this lesson

Confined areas combine everything hard about helicopters — power management, obstacle clearance, and decision-making. Your tutor scouts sites with you, coaches your high reconnaissance, and talks you through the approach until you can do it alone.

Why a human tutor? Confined area judgement is about reading terrain. A tutor teaches you to see the obstacles and wind indicators that experience reveals.

What you'll learn

  • High and low reconnaissance — what to look for
  • Choosing approach and departure paths based on wind and obstacles
  • Power check before committing to the landing zone
  • Steep approach technique for tight spaces
  • Abort criteria — when to wave off and pick a new site
  • Departure planning to avoid the avoid curve

Prerequisites

  • Confident hovering and slow flight
  • Helicopter you know well
