Everything you need to know about how SimTuts lessons work
SimTuts provides an all-in-one learning experience with built-in video calls directly in your browser. When your lesson starts, simply click the "Join Call" button and you'll be connected with your tutor instantly—no external software required.
Your tutor will guide you through concepts while you fly together in multiplayer, allowing them to demonstrate techniques and observe your progress directly. The video call stays open throughout your session for real-time communication.
SimTuts includes integrated video and voice calling. Everything happens right in your browser—no downloads, no accounts to create, no complicated setup.
For hands-on instruction, you and your tutor will connect to the same multiplayer server. This allows your tutor to fly alongside you, demonstrate maneuvers, and observe your technique in real-time—all while communicating through the SimTuts video call.
Many tutors run their own dedicated server specifically for lessons. This provides a private, distraction-free environment with custom training missions.
How to connect:
Your tutor may suggest meeting on a public server, especially for lessons involving busy multiplayer scenarios or specific server environments.
Popular training-friendly servers include:
Tutors often use custom-built training missions designed for specific learning objectives. These might include pre-positioned targets, specific weather conditions, or scripted scenarios.
If your tutor sends you a mission file (.miz), place it in:
C:\Users\[YourName]\Saved Games\DCS\MissionsFor DCS Open Beta, use "DCS.openbeta" instead of "DCS" in the path.
Make sure you own the same aircraft module as your lesson focus. If a mission includes aircraft you don't own, you can usually still join but will be limited to modules you have.
Maps: You'll also need the correct map (terrain) module. Many tutors use the free Caucasus map, but some lessons may require Syria, Persian Gulf, or other maps.
During lessons, tutors may need to share mission files (.miz), kneeboard images, or reference documents with you. File sharing is done through external cloud services for security and convenience.
Upload your file to a cloud storage service and share the link via the lesson chat:
Only download files from tutors you trust. SimTuts does not host or scan shared files. If you receive suspicious links or files, please report it to us immediately via the contact form.
Your tutor can start the lesson within a flexible time window:
Tip: You'll see a "Join Video Session" button appear as soon as your tutor starts the video call. The page updates automatically - no need to refresh!
Your card isn't charged when you book—only when you join the video call. This means you can book with confidence knowing you won't be charged for lessons that don't happen.
Not sure what a tutoring session actually looks like? Here's a typical first lesson structure, though your tutor may adapt based on your goals and experience level.
Meet your tutor, discuss what you want to learn, and set expectations for the session.
Your tutor will gauge your current level—maybe a quick startup or some basic maneuvers—to tailor the instruction.
The bulk of your lesson. Learn by doing with real-time guidance, demonstrations, and practice in multiplayer.
Review what you learned, get recommendations for practice, and discuss topics for future lessons.
Don't worry about being a beginner—tutors are used to working with all skill levels. The most helpful thing you can do is come with specific questions or goals, even if it's just "I want to learn how to land without crashing."
SimTuts is designed to make tutoring safe and straightforward for both students and tutors.
Video calls and messaging stay on the platform. No need to share personal contact details.
Only students who completed a lesson can leave reviews, so ratings reflect real experiences.
