Lesson Guide

Everything you need to know about how SimTuts lessons work

How Lessons Work

SimTuts provides an all-in-one learning experience with built-in video calls directly in your browser. When your lesson starts, simply click the "Join Call" button and you'll be connected with your tutor instantly—no external software required.

Your tutor will guide you through concepts while you fly together in multiplayer, allowing them to demonstrate techniques and observe your progress directly. The video call stays open throughout your session for real-time communication.

Built-in Video Calls

No External Software Needed

SimTuts includes integrated video and voice calling. Everything happens right in your browser—no downloads, no accounts to create, no complicated setup.

  • Click "Join Call" when your lesson is about to start
  • Grant camera and microphone permissions when prompted
  • Your tutor will join the same call automatically
  • High-quality video and audio for clear instruction

Video Features

  • Face-to-face communication with your tutor
  • Toggle camera on/off as needed
  • Works on desktop and laptop browsers
  • Optimized for low bandwidth usage

Audio Features

  • Crystal-clear voice communication
  • Mute/unmute with one click
  • Echo cancellation built-in
  • Works with any headset or speakers

Flying Together

For hands-on instruction, you and your tutor will connect to the same multiplayer server. This allows your tutor to fly alongside you, demonstrate maneuvers, and observe your technique in real-time—all while communicating through the SimTuts video call.

Tutor-Hosted Server

Many tutors run their own dedicated server specifically for lessons. This provides a private, distraction-free environment with custom training missions.

How to connect:

  1. Launch your simulator
  2. Click "Multiplayer" from the main menu
  3. Click "Server Browser" or "Direct Connect"
  4. Enter the IP address provided by your tutor (via video call)
  5. Enter the password if required

Public Training Servers

Your tutor may suggest meeting on a public server, especially for lessons involving busy multiplayer scenarios or specific server environments.

Popular training-friendly servers include:

  • Hoggit Training Server
  • Through The Inferno (TTI)
  • Growling Sidewinder (for PvP-focused training)
  • 4YA servers

Training Missions

Tutors often use custom-built training missions designed for specific learning objectives. These might include pre-positioned targets, specific weather conditions, or scripted scenarios.

Mission Files

If your tutor sends you a mission file (.miz), place it in:

C:\Users\[YourName]\Saved Games\DCS\Missions

For DCS Open Beta, use "DCS.openbeta" instead of "DCS" in the path.

Module Requirements

Make sure you own the same aircraft module as your lesson focus. If a mission includes aircraft you don't own, you can usually still join but will be limited to modules you have.

Maps: You'll also need the correct map (terrain) module. Many tutors use the free Caucasus map, but some lessons may require Syria, Persian Gulf, or other maps.

Sharing Files

During lessons, tutors may need to share mission files (.miz), kneeboard images, or reference documents with you. File sharing is done through external cloud services for security and convenience.

How to Share Files

Upload your file to a cloud storage service and share the link via the lesson chat:

  • Google Drive - Right-click file → Share → Copy link
  • Dropbox - Right-click file → Copy Dropbox link
  • OneDrive - Right-click file → Share → Copy link
  • WeTransfer - Good for larger files, generates a download link

For Tutors

  • Prepare mission files before the lesson starts
  • Use "Anyone with link can view" permissions
  • Test your links work before sharing
  • Consider organizing files in a shared folder for regular students

For Students

  • Download files to your DCS Missions folder
  • Scan downloaded files with antivirus if unsure
  • Ask your tutor if a link doesn't work
  • Keep shared files organized for future reference

Safety Note

Only download files from tutors you trust. SimTuts does not host or scan shared files. If you receive suspicious links or files, please report it to us immediately via the contact form.

Technical Requirements

Minimum Setup

  • Your flight simulator - DCS World, MSFS 2024, or X-Plane
  • Modern web browser - Chrome, Firefox, or Edge for video calls
  • Headset with microphone - Clear communication is essential
  • HOTAS or flight stick - Mouse and keyboard work but aren't ideal
  • Stable internet connection - For video calls and multiplayer

Recommended Additions

  • TrackIR or head tracking - Dramatically improves situational awareness
  • Second monitor - Useful for keeping the video call visible while flying
  • Webcam - Optional but helps build rapport with your tutor
  • VR headset - If you fly in VR, ensure audio works with your setup

Before Your Lesson

When Your Lesson Can Start

Your tutor can start the lesson within a flexible time window:

  • Up to 30 minutes early - If both you and your tutor are ready, the lesson can begin ahead of schedule
  • Up to 2 hours after - If there are delays, the lesson can still start within 2 hours of the scheduled time

What to Expect in Your First Lesson

Not sure what a tutoring session actually looks like? Here's a typical first lesson structure, though your tutor may adapt based on your goals and experience level.

1

Introductions & Goals (5 mins)

Meet your tutor, discuss what you want to learn, and set expectations for the session.

2

Skill Assessment (5-10 mins)

Your tutor will gauge your current level—maybe a quick startup or some basic maneuvers—to tailor the instruction.

3

Hands-On Instruction (main session)

The bulk of your lesson. Learn by doing with real-time guidance, demonstrations, and practice in multiplayer.

4

Summary & Next Steps (5 mins)

Review what you learned, get recommendations for practice, and discuss topics for future lessons.

Tip for First-Timers

Don't worry about being a beginner—tutors are used to working with all skill levels. The most helpful thing you can do is come with specific questions or goals, even if it's just "I want to learn how to land without crashing."

Platform Protection

SimTuts is designed to make tutoring safe and straightforward for both students and tutors.

🔒

Secure Communication

Video calls and messaging stay on the platform. No need to share personal contact details.

Verified Reviews

Only students who completed a lesson can leave reviews, so ratings reflect real experiences.

Common Issues

Video call not working
  • Check that your browser has permission to use camera and microphone
  • Try refreshing the page and clicking "Join Call" again
  • Ensure no other application is using your camera
  • Try a different browser (Chrome works best)
  • Check your internet connection is stable
Can't hear tutor / tutor can't hear me
  • Check your browser's audio input/output settings
  • Ensure your mic isn't muted (check the video call controls)
  • Verify your system audio settings are correct
  • Try a different audio device (headset vs speakers)
  • Refresh the page and rejoin the call
Can't connect to multiplayer server
  • Check you're on the same DCS version (Stable vs Open Beta)
  • Verify the server IP and port are correct (ask your tutor via video call)
  • Check if the server requires a password
  • Ensure your firewall isn't blocking DCS
  • Try restarting DCS and your router
Poor performance while in multiplayer
  • Lower graphics settings in DCS
  • Close browser tabs and background applications
  • Check if other devices are using bandwidth
  • Use a wired ethernet connection instead of WiFi
  • Keep the video call window minimized while flying if needed
