Class D Zone Transit
intermediateUK phraseologyRequest a transit through Class D controlled airspace, handle the conditional instruction "remain outside controlled airspace", then read back a full transit clearance including the clearance limit and a not-above level restriction. Learn why you must never enter controlled airspace until you have an explicit clearance.
Briefing
You are VFR in PA-28 G-ABCD, five miles west of Warrington at altitude two thousand feet on QNH 1015, wanting to transit the Liverpool Class D Control Zone southbound. Call Liverpool Approach on 119.850. You may NOT enter until specifically cleared.

- Exchange 1
Make your initial call to Liverpool Approach and request a zone transit.
💡 State clearly that you want a zone transit so the controller knows you intend to enter controlled airspace and will need a clearance. Full callsign on first contact.
- Exchange 2
ATC: “Golf Alpha Bravo Charlie Delta, Liverpool Approach, pass your message.”
Pass your message: type, position, level and intended routing.
💡 Give the controller your position, level and where you want to go so they can plan the transit against their other traffic. Keep it in standard order and lead with your callsign.
- Exchange 3
ATC: “Golf Alpha Bravo Charlie Delta, remain outside controlled airspace, standby.”
This is a conditional instruction — you are NOT cleared to enter. Read it back.
💡 "Remain outside controlled airspace" means hold clear of the zone boundary until you get a positive clearance. Read it back in full — "Roger" alone does not confirm you understand you must stay out.
- Exchange 4
ATC: “Golf Alpha Bravo Charlie Delta, cleared to enter controlled airspace to Runcorn Bridge, not above altitude two thousand feet, VFR, QNH one zero one five.”
Read back the transit clearance verbatim — clearance limit, the not-above level and the QNH are all mandatory.
💡 Read back the whole clearance: the clearance limit (Runcorn Bridge), the not-above level and the QNH. Busting the not-above level is a controlled-airspace infringement — the readback is your last check before you enter.
